New Green, Clean E-waste Processor
SYRACUSE, N.Y.-Ecology-conscious, efficient e-waste processing is here. A prototype for a new method has proven able to extract precious metals, recover reusable parts, separate metals from non-metals and make pure hydrogen gas from unwanted computers and other electronic waste, all without generating pollution.
Developed by retired engineer Jim Moltion, the patented Alpha DePop 2005 system removes parts from circuit boards at a rate of one board every 9 to 12 seconds.
The system melts only the solder and nothing else. Using mechanical size reduction, the Alpha decreases all the depopulated boards and non-useful parts to a minimum size. This powder is introduced into a modified hydroclyclone where the metals are separated from the non-metals. The output of the system is a mix of all the metals in a powdered form which is less costly to process using today’s electrochemical process in the refining and smelting operation.
“It is the most positive method of eradicating e-waste profitably,” Moltion said.
During this whole operation, the Alpha recovers solder and tantalum capacitors for scrap value. One ton of computer mother boards can yield up to 300 to 400 pounds of pure copper, along with gold, platinum, palladium and other metals.
The non-metals, mostly fiberglass from the boards, are exceptionally cleaned of metals and can be reformed into building products. The same is true for the plastics that are not bromated. The Alpha achieves almost 100 percent total recovery of wealth from old computers and electronics.
Moltion believes that using the Alpha can eliminate exporting e-waste to third-world countries where it is frequently burned. This practice subsequently causes pollution that returns to the United States in toxic rainfall.
The Alpha also offers immediate green benefits. The system generates more clean hydrogen energy that it uses. Its design meets and exceeds U.S. clean air and water standards, demands a very low labor cost, and occupies a small footprint.
Moltion spent the past 12 years working on the Alpha, which is now at the prototype stage where the proof of concept was developed. Upon receiving sufficient funding, he hopes to bring the system to the commercial market.

Recyclable building panels boost home cooling efficiency
In addition to its heating efficiency, a home’s cooling efficiency largely depends upon its insulation.
Many of his prospective clients think they’ve misheard him when Paul Fordham tells them that the right insulation can save up to 90 percent on their home heating and cooling expenses. But using structural insulated panels (SIPs) instead of standard stud and batt insulation makes all the difference.
Proprietor of CP Millworks (www.cpmillworks.com) in Clyde, Wayne County, Fordham has more than 20 years’ experience in construction.
“SIPs are super energy efficient,” he said. “We can make a home much more efficient than a traditionally-built home.”
Fordham deals in American-made SIPs, which are panels of oriented strand board (OSB) sandwiching rigid foam insulation. OSB is made from wood that would normally be wasted in the milling process and the core foam material is recyclable, too. Fairly new in Central New York, the SIP building system has existed for about 50 years.
“There’s no reason to believe SIPs won’t last hundreds of years,” Fordham said. “There’s no condensation so there’s no rot, no moisture, no decomposition in the walls. They’re solid foam.”
In a new construction, the panels can make what Fordham calls “an energy-efficient, tight envelope” that is three to 12 inches thick, depending upon the grade of SIP used.
Stud and fiberglass construction costs less than using SIPs, but “with the additional cost in heating and cooling, you’ll eat up that savings in four years,” Fordham said.
On average, SIPs offer an 80 to 90 percent energy savings over traditional fiberglass insulation. Some homeowners find that with SIPs, their annual heating and cooling costs equal what they used to spend each month.
SIPs may also be retrofitted to an existing building without tearing apart the existing structure, making it a good choice for green renovations.
“We like to say that you can build green to save green,” Fordham said.

****************FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE**************** CONTACT: MARK CARFAGNO, owner Traditional Karate & Fitness, Inc. MARCH 24, 2008
Local Martial Artist Honored for Working with Youth SYRACUSE-Mark Carfagno, a martial arts instructor and owner of Traditional Karate & Fitness, Inc. received a plaque commemorating his entry into the World Professional Martial Arts Organization Hall of Fame at a Jan. 20, 2008 ceremony. The award lauded Carfagno’s development of the After-school Life Skills Program which he operates in coordination with area schools. Great Grandmaster Aaron Banks, who heads the organization, presided over the event held at Madison Square Garden. “I felt the award was for the kids,” Carfagno said, “and that this recognition would help me reach even more kids.” Carfagno’s program seeks to help youth effectively diffuse violent situations among their peers. “They learn that they have choices and not to be controlled by fear,” Carfagno said. “Most conflict comes from fear. A bully chooses his target by looking for someone who is afraid.” Life Skills teaches children how to cope with violent classmates by learning different choices which work better. “Rehabilitating someone brought up on the streets and that has been in the correctional system is a huge task,” Carfagno said, “but at five years old, had he been taught that he had choices? If he had learned to think instead of fear, maybe his life would have been different. “Youths who bring a gun to school, or attack a parent or other authority figure, or turn a gun on themselves, are young people who feel they have no choice. Teaching children at a young age that there are many ways to deal with any situation is the answer. Many children feel there is only one thing that can be done in a conflict or situation, when in reality there are limitless choices or alternatives. Life may be hard but knowing there are so many alternatives would almost eliminate those extreme choices.” Carfagno’s students learn to choose differently, such as walking away, befriending the other person or making a joke. “There are well over 20 choices to avoid conflict,” Carfagno said, “but the best thing is while you’re thinking of what you can do, you’re not afraid so you’re not a target and most of the time the conflict never happens at all. “This alone will probably avoid any conflict as most assailants don’t want to deal with someone who is confident and thinking. They are looking for someone cowering and fearful.” Life Skills also includes respect, good attitude, cooperation, discipline, and self-defense.
“Our youth can learn better ways to deal with the problems that confront them, and what life has for they’re future. Life Skills gives them the tools to go through life with self-esteem and honor.” The Life Skills program, in coordination with city schools, offers affordable after school childcare with free bussing from the schools. Carfago’s motivation lies in his own experience as a small child who witnessed domestic violence. He grew up feeling fearful all the time. When he began learning martial arts as an older child, his self-confidence grew and the fears of the past receded. “My goals in martial arts,” Carfago said, “are to help those who need the art: children, women, peace officers, military and anyone needing self-defense. I want to help eliminate fear and show our youth that they have choices. Conflict comes from fear and those that feel they have no other choice, whether that conflict be between two kids on a playground or two countries.” Since beginning in 1972, Carfagno earned black belts in numerous martial arts styles, including a sixth-degree black belt in goju ryu, and first degree in Beikoku Shido-kan Shorin-ryu. He also studies judo and Kobuto. He opened his own school in 2002 and began the Life Skills program in a year later in conjunction with the YMCA at the Van Duyn Elementary School in Syracuse. He has since moved the classes to his dojo. Traditional Karate & Fitness is a shibu School for the North American Beikoku Association under Sensei Seikichi Iha (10th-degree black belt), his sensei for Shorin-ryu Karate. Carfagno is also a member and instructor for Matayyoshi Kobudo, under Sensei Franco Sanguinetti, his sensei for Kobudo. Carfagno also operates a dog grooming shop, antiques store, and e-bay listing business. Carfagno is father of a 19-year-old son and his fiancé and martial arts business partner, Catherine Darling, has a 19-year-old daughter.
